Aberdare Conservation Fence
Electric conservation fencing to reduce human-wildlife conflict and protect the Aberdare Conservation Area. 410 km built and maintained.
Rhino Ark was formed in 1988 to assist the Kenya Wildlife Service in building an electric fence along sections of Aberdare National Park, beginning on the Eastern Salient where wildlife concentrations are highest and farmland begins immediately beyond the boundary.
The programme evolved into protecting the wider Aberdare Conservation Area. The fence stands seven feet above ground and three feet below, with mesh deterrents for burrowing animals and hot-wired posts against climbers. Forest-adjacent fence attendants maintain successive sections around the clock.
The Aberdare segment accounts for 410 km of Rhino Ark’s national fence network. Complementary work includes the Aberdare Joint Surveillance Unit with KWS, black rhino habitat security, and support to mountain bongo recovery.
