Rhino Ark UK
Rhino Ark UK is the sister charity of Rhino Ark Kenya, and works to support ongoing conservation activity in East Africa. UK operators work closely with the Kenyan team to submit grant applications, hold fundraising events and promote the cause in the United Kingdom.
Rhino Ark UK also handles donations for local teams taking part in the Rhino Charge annual off-road competition.
2025 marks 30 years of Rhino Ark UK: three decades of raising funds and awareness for forest and wildlife conservation in Kenya. From supporting the Rhino Charge to securing places in the London Marathon and RideLondon, supporters have helped raise over £2.6 million for Rhino Ark Kenya Charitable Trust.
London Marathon
Rhino Ark UK fields runners in the London Marathon to raise funds for Kenyan mountain forest conservation. Contact ross@rhinoark.org for place enquiries.
UK Rhino Challenge
An action-packed outdoor family challenge supporting Rhino Ark’s conservation work. Next edition planned for 3 May 2026 at Pippingford Park.
Road shows & Goodwood
Rhino Ark UK regularly attends events including the Goodwood Festival of Speed (Britpart 4×4 Arena) to reconnect with supporters and share updates from Kenya.
Rainwater harvesting
UK fundraisers have helped deliver rainwater harvesting tanks to schools in the Aberdares, supporting clean water, sanitation and conservation education.

The Lord Aberdare DL
President
Lord (Alastair) Aberdare was elected as an independent hereditary member of the House of Lords in 2009, where his principal interests focus on education, skills, and employment. Previously he was a founder director of a small social enterprise helping disadvantaged and unemployed young Londoners to gain skills and employment. Before that he worked as a consultant in corporate public affairs and reputation management, following 21 years with IBM, including postings in the United States and Belgium.

Kit Kaberry
Trustee
A retired Chartered Accountant having worked on major infrastructure projects in the UK and abroad in the tropics for 35 years. His love of Land Rovers took him to entering the UK Rhino Charge several times when he won the Victor Ludorum enabling his first entry to the Rhino Charge in 2010 in Kenya. He became a Trustee of Rhino Charge UK in 2012. Kit now heads up the fundraising side in UK and promotes RAUK with colleagues at various shows.

Nicholas Kuhle
Trustee
Born in Nakuru, Kenya, Nick is the son of Ken Kuhle, a founder of Rhino Ark. Grew up in Kenya and went to school in Nairobi before completing his education in the UK. He has always been passionate about wildlife and his fondest memories invariably revolve around safaris in Kenya. He now lives and works in the UK, and is married with two children. Nick's favourite place in the world is Rhino Retreat in the Aberdares!

John Nicholas Bowden
Trustee
John Bowden has a long-held love of Kenya and family connections there. He first became involved with Rhino Ark as a competitor in the inaugural UK Rhino Charge in 1997 and then in the Kenyan event in 1998. As the owner of Gumtree 4x4 Ltd, the event suited him as a Kenyaphile and off-road enthusiast and the fact that money was being raised for Rhino Ark was the bonus that sealed his ongoing interest. He became a Rhino Ark UK trustee in 2004, ran the UK Rhino Charge until 2016, and is now working with Kit Kaberry in particular to improve knowledge of and support for Rhino Ark in the UK and to seek out new sources of funds and devise events to bring in fresh donors. He attends such events as the Goodwood Festival of Speed and 4x4 Expo on behalf of Rhino Ark and will happily admit that he can “bore for England” on the work of the charity and how well it fits in with direct action conservation work benefitting people, wildlife and the environment. Ian Purcell

Ian is a retired science teacher having taught in prep schools in Nairobi and Sussex. It was at Cavina School, Nairobi that as well as teaching he shared his passion for the environment by running the school wildlife club, organising camping trips to the national parks and expeditions up Mount Kenya.

Helen Feather
Trustee
Helen Feather became a Trustee of Rhino Ark UK in July 2022. Helen has worked for the UK Foreign,Commonwealth & Development Office for the last 40 years in a variety of roles. Helen’s fascination with Africa and in particular the rift valley began whilst studying Geography A level and one of her very first overseas assignments with the FCO was to Mozambique in 1985. She met her husband Ross Field on a posting to Botswana in 1988 and since then has spent a significant part of her career in Africa ( as well as other parts of the world). Her most recent overseas postings were to Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan. She is currently working for the FCDO as a Senior Finance Business Partner.

Toby Latta

Toby Latta is currently the CEO of the Eastern Africa Association, a corporate membership organisation whose mission is to promote and support long term, sustainable investment in Eastern Africa. The Association’s members are companies from around the world typically investing and operating in multiple countries in the region. A not-for-profit organisation, the EAA has offices in London and Nairobi. Before that, for 25 years he worked for Control Risks, the global risk consultancy which helps corporate clients identify and mitigate political, security and integrity risks. He held a variety of leadership roles there managing, at different times, the business in the former Soviet Union, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia.

Kamal Shah

Kama Shah was born and raised in Mombasa, Kenya and is passionate about conservation. He is the head of Stephenson Harwood's Africa and India groups and specialises in complex, cross-border international arbitration, litigation and fraud and asset recovery. He acts for governments, government entities, banks, private corporations and high net worth individuals in a range of matters including those relating to projects and infrastructure, joint ventures, banking and finance, shareholder arrangements, energy and a range of schemes commonly used to defraud individuals and corporations.
